Meta advertising — Facebook and Instagram — is the most accessible paid media channel for Kenyan businesses. The entry cost is low, the audience is enormous, and the targeting capabilities are genuinely powerful. And yet, the majority of small and medium businesses running Meta ads are getting poor results.
It's rarely because Meta ads don't work. It's because the same handful of mistakes keep showing up, campaign after campaign. Here are the five we see most often — and how to fix each one.
Targeting Everyone (and Therefore No One)
The most common mistake we see is broad, unfocused targeting. A business selling premium office furniture in Westlands sets their audience to "Kenya, 18–65, all interests." They get thousands of impressions, a handful of clicks, and zero sales.
Meta's algorithm needs signal to optimise. When you give it a massive, undifferentiated audience, it has no idea who to show your ad to. It spreads your budget thin and never finds the people who actually convert.
The fix: Start narrow. Define your ideal customer with specificity — location (Nairobi, Mombasa, specific neighbourhoods), age range, income indicators (device type, interests like business travel or premium brands), and job titles if relevant. A tighter audience of 50,000 people who actually match your customer profile will outperform a broad audience of 2 million every time.
Sending Traffic to Your Homepage
You've written a compelling ad. Someone clicks. They land on your homepage — a general overview of everything you do — and have no idea what to do next. They leave. You paid for that click.
A homepage is not a landing page. It's designed for exploration, not conversion. When someone clicks an ad for a specific product or offer, they need to land on a page that continues that exact conversation — with a clear headline, relevant information, and a single call to action.
The fix: Build dedicated landing pages for each campaign. If you're running an ad for a free brand audit, the landing page should be about the free brand audit — nothing else. Remove navigation. Remove distractions. Make the next step obvious.
Optimising for the Wrong Objective
Meta gives you a long list of campaign objectives: awareness, reach, traffic, engagement, leads, conversions. Many businesses choose "traffic" because they want people to visit their website. But traffic doesn't mean sales.
If your goal is to get enquiries or purchases, you need to optimise for that outcome — not for clicks. When you optimise for conversions, Meta's algorithm learns to find people who are likely to complete the action you care about, not just people who are likely to click.
The fix: Install the Meta Pixel on your website. Set up conversion events (form submissions, WhatsApp clicks, purchases). Then run campaigns optimised for those events. Yes, your cost-per-click will be higher — but your cost-per-result will be dramatically lower.
Running One Ad and Calling It a Campaign
We regularly audit accounts where a business has been running the same single ad for months. Same image, same copy, same audience. They wonder why performance has dropped off.
Ad fatigue is real. When the same people see the same ad repeatedly, they stop engaging. Meta's relevance score drops. Your cost-per-result goes up. Eventually the algorithm stops showing the ad altogether.
The fix: Always run at least 3–5 ad variations per campaign. Test different images, different headlines, different hooks. Let Meta's algorithm identify which combinations perform best, then allocate more budget to the winners. Refresh creative every 4–6 weeks.
Ignoring the Data (or Not Knowing What to Look At)
Meta Ads Manager gives you more data than most businesses know what to do with. The result? Either they ignore it entirely, or they focus on vanity metrics like reach and impressions that don't tell them whether the campaign is working.
The metrics that actually matter depend on your objective. For lead generation: cost per lead, lead quality, and conversion rate. For e-commerce: return on ad spend (ROAS), cost per purchase, and average order value. For awareness: reach, frequency, and video view rate.
The fix: Define your KPIs before you launch. Know what a good cost-per-result looks like for your business. Check your data weekly — not daily (daily fluctuations are noise) — and make decisions based on trends, not single data points.
The Bigger Picture
Meta ads work. The businesses that get results aren't doing anything magical — they're just avoiding the mistakes above and being systematic about testing and optimisation. The good news is that fixing even two or three of these issues can dramatically improve your results without increasing your budget.
Start with targeting and landing pages. Those two fixes alone account for the majority of wasted ad spend we see in Kenyan business accounts.
